The Snow keeps coming, conditions are great in most areas, grooming is at full tilt, and the weekend ahead is full of events for young and older alike. Now is a great time to be outside – remember you can always add layers to keep you warmer or ski a little harder to build up heat. Classic skiing, because of the way wax grips, is better in the colder snow of mornings and, in the Fraser Valley, it can be the whole day! Skate skiing, because you are just pushing your edge against the snow for propulsion, if often better in the warmer temps of the afternoon.
GRAND NORDIC KIDS FREE FRIDAYS AT SMR start this Friday Jan 10 from 1-230 pm. The lessons are every Friday at 1p through January and February. For kids 5-10, we offer Kids Never-ever (have not been on skis before), Kids Classic (have some skiing background either Alpine or Nordic), and Kids Skate (want to try Skate or recommend Hockey-type background). Equipment and trail pass are provided. Classes are limited so sign up at www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4CACAD2EA7FACF8-51586680-free. Parents are encouraged to help during the lesson and also receive equipment and trail pass for helping so they learn kids lingo, ways to have fun with their kids, and ways to dress properly for conditions.
GRAND COUNTY NORDIC RACE SERIES Race two is the famous Snow Mountain 15K/7.5K/and 3K Classic, a long-time tradition in the Fraser Valley on Saturday Jan 11 at Snow Mtn Ranch. Races start at 10am, no day of registration. Come join the fun either as a racer (some call it recreational skiing with numbers while others are highly competitive!), a volunteer (a well-run race is very dependent on its volunteers with a job for everyone and we always need the help!), or a spectator -just bring your bell, watch and join in the fun! Every racer needs support… Kids 18 and under can ski any race for just $10 so it is family friendly down to your 4-year old… Go to www.skigrandnordic.org to get all the details or sign up as a racer or volunteer.
COLORADO BIATHLON at Snow Mtn Ranch has a sprint race on Saturday Jan 11 and a pursuit race on Sunday Jan 12. You must be certified for these races. Next weekend is a Safety Certification clinic and a Race for first-timers. Go to www.coloradobiathlon.org for details.
GRAND NORDIC FREE LESSONS are Sunday JAN 12 AT SMR. Don’t forget to help your season with free lessons now that the snow is getting better and better. Snow Mountain Ranch hosts the second of two Grand Nordic Free Lessons on Sunday Jan 12 featuring instructors from Grand Nordic, Winter Park Competition Center, Colorado Nordic Masters, Summit Masters and Snow Mtn Ranch with morning classes starting at 10a and afternoon classes starting at 1p. There is still room in the afternoon classes… Grand Nordic members receive complementary trail pass and equipment if needed. Classes are offered both morning and afternoon for both classic and skate at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels as well as kids 5-10 never-ever skiers, classic and skate.
