The December Free Lesson day is canceled due to snow conditions!
Grand Nordic has been offering free Nordic lessons to it’s members and the public since the 1990’s and has never had to cancel a free lesson. But this year is a strange early season almost devoid of snow in the lower elevations and we are concerned for the health and safety of our newer skiers. Snow conditions are marginal at best and, even if we had received a substantial “dump” Wednesday night, the first set of Free Lessons for this season is cancelled.
New snow must mix into or adhere to the older snow or it will just be scraped away or blown away leaving a layer of hard crust or even ice, especially in the morning. New drier snow is difficult to pack into tracks that we know are needed by beginners, even in flat terrain. No tracks for beginners can lead to slipping, falling, and total lack of control – the perfect recipe for a hard fall on a shoulder, a wrist, a hip. Not a good way to start a beginner lesson.
SMR is hosting the Junior National Qualifying Races on their good intermediate terrain that has good snow cover. This is where we normally take our intermediate classes. And where will the regular skiing public go?
We are being squeezed out of good beginner/intermediate lesson terrain and into low snow/no snow areas so, out of concern for safety of the new and beginner skiers as well as intermediate skiers, we are cancelling the Free Lessons for Dec 21. Sign up now for the second Free Lesson Sunday Jan 25.
If you took advantage of the discounts offered on SMR lodging for Grand Nordic races and lessons, the cancellation window is 48 hrs for a full refund. Or come anyway to enjoy the JNQ’s or other activities offered by SMR in our beautiful Grand County. Volunteers to help Sunday at the JNQ’s are needed as well.
